For about a week and a half now, I’ve been putting in 12 to 14 hour days on the house.  I’m reeallly tired!  I’m trying very hard not to get bogged down in too many details and just get the big jobs done. Of course the details are important too, but there are so many, and there is definitely a law of diminishing returns!

Yesterday Mike Jacobson of Jacobson Concrete came to start the new concrete walk to the front entry.  The old one went right alongside the house, and it was pretty boring, architecturally.  Also, it had sunk down so far that the top step was four inches more than the lower one.   I can’t tell you how many guests almost fell going down - even after warning them.  Very treacherous!

In two days, Mike and Hector (didn’t get his last name, sorry) demolished the old walk and hauled it away, dug, put in and compacted a new base, formed the new one, got it poured (including two 48 inch deep footings that I had dug ahead of time) and did all the finishing and were done by 2:30 this afternoon.  These guys work their butts off! And they’re artists to boot!

It was great working with mike, because I could just explain my design to him verbally, didn’t need a bunch of drawings, told him the finished my heights I needed, and how I wanted it pitched to shed water.  He got everything dead on! Price for the whole job - $1500 bucks.  A good deal all around!

I framed out the platform this evening, and after a little backfilling underneath, I’ll deck it tomorrow.

Did I mention Jacobson Concrete?
